Whinlatter

A couple of snaps from a sunny Whinlatter, courtesy of Will, Cheers Mate!

Circ du gable

The mtb circumnavigation of Great Gable has been on my tick list for several years.

With a great weather forecast and a suitable partner in crime (Will Lund) we fully committed and had what turned out to be an absolute belter of a day in the hills.

The route is often dismissed due to the un-ridable nature of three of the four climbs.  Approximately 1000m of ascent is gained on foot, shouldering a bike.

However... The resulting descents certainly make up for the hard climbs.
At Black Sail before the first climb.
Great riding off Black Sail Pass, heading into Wasdale.  Will making it look easy.
 Perfect dry, dusty trails.

 Exhilarating.
Will shouldering the 28 stead for the second time.  Climbing out of wasdale to Styhead.
From left: Green Gable, Great Gable, Kirk Fell.

Looking at our first climb from the summit of our last.
 One for the catalog.

Strava broke my bike

Attempting to ride the Kirroughtree Red route (in record time!) resulted in demolishing the drive chain.

Thankfully, the mech hanger gave in before either the mech or the frame.

The damage looks worse than it actually is and could have been fixed on the trail side if I wasn't 5mins from the van.

We always carry spare mech hangers for this (common) mechanical issue.

Try the search option on the following link to find the correct one for your ride.

Annoyingly, pretty much each make and model of bike has a different hanger.  Therefore, I carry an emergency hanger which can be fitted to the majority of bikes 'to get you home'.

Alternatively, ditch all gears and therefore the requirement for a hanger...

All zipped up and ready for the freewheel retreat.
